ITB
Costa Rica obtained the third place at ITB

The Costa Rican Booth was awarded with the third place in the Latin-American Category, during the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, where 187 countries participated in 11 different categories.

Our country reached this important position over Mexico and Brazil, with a stand of 250 meters, which simulated the entrance to a tropical forest including a canopy, lush vegetation, trees and native animals existing in Costa Rica.

Mr. Carlos Ricardo Benavides, Ministry of Tourism, mentioned that this is the third award received by Costa Rica in a year, showing our efforts to promote our country in a better way.

As every year, our CEO Marcos Crespo attended to this important event.

Costa Rica as the Worlds First BioGem Country

On February 3rd the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) named Costa Rica as the world's first "BioGem" country, on recognition of its efforts to protect the more of 500.000 species of flora and fauna existing in the country and to support Costa Rica's efforts to become the world's first carbon-neutral country by 2021.

BioGems are places with a prodigious biological abundance that may be in danger. There are only 12 BioGems on the American Continent; most of them are specific forests or wilderness areas; however the entire country of Costa Rica has been designated as a "BioGem" area.

The BioGems Initiative, launched in 2001, employs the power of citizen activism to take on and prevail over corporate interests. Each year, we mobilize hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens to take action via the Internet in defense of these irreplaceable natural treasures and the wildlife that depends on them for survival. Our online activists -- known as BioGems Defenders -- bring overwhelming pressure to bear on governments and companies bent on industrializing the world's last wild places. www.SaveBioGems.org

Support our New7Wonders of Nature Nominee
Cocos Island has been nominated to become one of the seven wonders of nature.

Cocos Island is an oceanic island of volcanic origin, with a land surface of 24 square km and 1997 sq. km. of protected marine ecosystems. Cocos Island is a unique and exceptional insular territory. These characteristics are determined by a series of conditions related to its geological origin, geographical location, and its character as an oceanic island, which provides a diversity of natural environments and exceptional marine and land flora and fauna.

The New7wonders Foundation & Campaign was established in 2001 by the Swiss-born Canadian filmmaker, author and adventurer Bernard Weber to contribute to the protection of the worlds human-built and natural heritage and to foster respect for the cultural diversity on our planet.

The first official New 7 Wonders of the World campaign was a resounding success, in which more than 100 million votes were cast. Now, the second campaign is off to a promising start: Some 430 nominations from 224 different countries were submitted by some half a million people within the first few months of the campaign. Since Jan 1st, 2009 the national qualification phase is over, and you can vote for Cocos Island and other six options from the list of 261 qualified nominees. Our current rank is #4 on group B.

You can only vote one time with one e-mail address. Vote here for Cocos Island and help us to raise awareness and preserve its unique marine environment: http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/vote_on_nominees/

Guayabo National Monument: Worldwide Engineering Patrimony

This archaeological site was recently declared Worldwide Engineering Patrimony by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The Guayabo National Monument archeological site represents one of the highest degrees of socio-cultural development achieved by the countrys pre-Hispanic societies.

Declared a National Monument in August 1973 for being the largest and most important archeological site discovered up to that time, Guayabo was occupied through four cultural phases from 1000 B.C. to 1550 A.D. Based on the type of constructionsaqueducts, roads, retaining walls or bridgesand the area, it is estimated that between 1,200 and 1,600 people inhabited the site.

Just for you to have an idea of the importance of the award, Machu Pichu received this same recognition just few months ago.

Earth Hour: Mar/28/09

CRT wants to spread the word and to invite you to participate on the Earth Hour.

On March 28 you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour. Or you can vote global warming by leaving your lights on. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote. 1,429 cities and towns in 80 countries have already committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009.

This campaign is looking for one billion votes for Earth, to tell world leaders that we have to take action against global warming. The results of the election are being presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

We also encourage you to take a more active participation. Whether you are at home, out shopping or on vacation you can make a real difference to the planet by taking simple everyday actions. You can be more Earth-friendly in your own life. We invite you to visit http://www.panda.org/how_you_can_help/greenliving/ for simple tips that can make the difference.
