Caracas, Venezuela (August 12, 2008) -- The Tour de las Americas is delighted to announce a new partnership with the Canadian Tour, as both Tours have agreed to co-sanction a series of three events in Chile, Argentina and Costa Rica between November 27 and December 14.
The events featured as part of this series will be Chile’s 50th Anniversary of the Sports Frances Open – November 27-30, Argentina’s Torneo de Maestros at Olivos GC– December 4-7, and the Costa Rica Golf Classic at Reserva Conchal – December 11-14. This solid trio will combine for a grand total of US $455,000 in prize money.
“We are very optimistic about this new partnership joining the Canadian Tour and the TLA. It is important to continually strive to find new horizons and open new doors for our players, who support our efforts in order to co-sanction events with a fellow Associate Member of the International Federation of PGA Tours,” commented the TLA Commissioner Henrique Lavie.
“While the Canadian Tour’s schedule is very strong between May and September, the TLA is mostly busy from October to May. The set up of both schedules provides a natural opportunity for both Tours to work together and provide its members a stronger schedule. We thank Commissioner Rick Janes and the Canadian Tour staff for making it possible to have this positive exchange,” added Commissioner Lavie, as the TLA’s up-and-coming players will have the opportunity to reach further into the Americas during the three-event series closing the 2008 season.
Although the Canadian Tour has sanctioned several events in Mexico over the last few years, this will be the first time it joins efforts with the Tour de las Americas.
“This is a comprehensive agreement that will provide new opportunities for our members as part of a long-term plan to extend our playing season” said Canadian Tour Commissioner Richard Janes.
“It involves a schedule of events co-sanctioned by the Canadian Tour and TLA that will eventually form part of a total Fall Series leading up to PGA TOUR Qualifying School.”
Members of both Tours will profit from this new partnership. Just to start, the winner of any of these co-sanctioned events will be granted a full membership on both the Canadian Tour and the Tour de las Americas. Meanwhile, the money earned by members of both Tours will also count as official money on each Order of Merit according to the Tours’ rules and regulations.
There will be other benefits for the top TLA players within the top-10 of the 2008 Order of Merit. Leading the way, the best player available will receive a full exemption for the entire 2009 Canadian Tour season. In addition there will be three consecutive exemptions in Canada for four TLA players, as well as exemptions for all Canadian Tour events in Mexico for four players.
The following are the three co-sanctioned events in detail:
November 27-30, 2008
50th Anniversary of the Sports Frances Open
Sports Frances Golf Club, Santiago- Chile
Prize fund: US $160,000
December 4-7, 2008

Prize fund: US $150,000
December 11-14, 2008

The Canadian Tour is the second Tour joining the TLA in Latin America, as the TLA has co-sanctioned over twenty tournaments with the European Challenge Tour between 2003 and 2008.
About the Tour de las Americas
The Tour de las Americas is the leading professional Tour of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was founded in 2000 and became an Associate Member of the International Federation of PGA Tours on July 2007. Halfway through the current season the TLA has sanctioned seven events in the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Mexico.
Latin America is a proven source of world-class stars such as Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, champion of the 2007 U.S. Open, and Paraguay’s Carlos Franco, a four-time PGA Tour champion. These players and other champions such as José Cóceres, Vicente Fernández and Ricardo González emerged from the South American Tour, which preceded the TLA.
Over the course of eight seasons the Tour has promoted new events and vaulted the careers of several new stars. Argentina’s Andrés Romero, a PGA Tour champion this season, and European Tour winners Ariel Cañete, Daniel Vancsik and César Monasterio are among several stars that emerged from the TLA ranks over the last few seasons.
